Chapter 21
Max
I rap my knuckles on the front door of Griff and Beauâs, not that anyone can hear me. The music is already turned up pretty loud. The early birds are most definitely already here. I should have left earlier, but I was messaging with Sam and lost track of time.
That guy is smarter than his years, and itâs a shame his parents are unenlightened assholes. Whatâs also a shame is the fact that heâs still having trouble with Jack. He finally broke down and admitted to me that it was definitely Jack who beat him up, though he wasnât quite sure who the other two were. Unfortunately, Jack seems to realize that Sam knows it was him, and heâs stepping up his homophobic-dickhead game. Heâs walking a dangerous line, because Iâm so close to confronting him even without knowing who the other guys are.
Upon entering the house, I make my way quickly past the throng of people gathered in the foyer and over to the kitchen area where I know Iâll likely find our crew hanging with Beau while he mixes drinks.
When I spot Xander and Micah sitting across from Beau, I lift my hand in greeting. âHey, whatâs up?â
They nod at me and raise their beer bottles.
It strikes me that this is the first time Iâve really been together in a casual setting with these guys since Beau and Micah saw us kissing. Obviously, Iâve been with all of them at school this week, but itâs not like any of them had come up to me and said, âSo, you and Griff, huh?â And I have no clue if heâd mentioned to any of them the little scene with Aubrey outside the bathroom or why Iâd gone MIA.
So, I have to wonder what theyâre thinking and how theyâll react when they see the two of us together. Hopefully, theyâll all be chill.
Not like weâll have much of a chance for anyone to see âGriff and Maxâ while everyone else is here. I doubt Griff would be down with that. Damn it, I wish we could just ignore everyone and do what we want. Someday, maybe.
Xander waves me over. âCome join us.â
I drop onto the stool between him and Micah, look at each of them in turn before I settle my gaze on Beau across from us.
âBeer?â Beauâs brows go up in question as he holds one out.
I nod. âSure. Thanks.â I accept it and take a swallow before setting it down on the counter in front of me. My brow furrows. âSo ⦠is this weird?â
Micah nudges my shoulder with his before rumbling, âIs what weird?â
My voice is low as my gaze darts around the room. âThe idea of Griff and me together. For you guys, I mean.â
Xanderâs brow furrows and both he and Micah shake their heads, but itâs actually Beau who answers. âIâll tell you pretty much the same thing I told my brother. Did it catch us by surprise? Fuck, yeah. Shocked the hell out of us.
